I watched this film because of the actors on the billing, not intellectual what to put a question to, and came away deeply touched and with a modern respect for Heath ledger. This is a very touching movie, a gritty scrutinize at the lives of the Ned Kelly Gang, a group of four friends pushed to become outlaws due to the injustices their family suffers in colonial Austrailia. It is a fair and tragic sage. The actors have done a surpurb job, portraying not brash larger-then-life characters, but realistic people who have suffered and yet have to go on, tragic heros whom you have to feel for by the waste of the film. Ledger gives a confident and used preformance, unlike any other fragment he has done before. It isn’t a role in which I would have expected to explore him, but he definately suceeds and shows his versitality as a serious actor. The Irish culture portayed against the Austrailian landscape gives the movie a surreal quality, and a sight at a historical era not usually view of. This is a breautiful dramatic peice you’ll not want to miss. Very well worth it in my thought.

Secondly, the book will gain in information that is either not given in the movie, or could be easily missed. This information would provide a greater belief of why Kelly does things in the movie.

For example, the reason for the siege at Glenrowan is not terribly distinct in the movie, though it is indirectly alluded to in a couple of scenes. One scene is when Kelly and Byrne are writing the Jerrilderee Letter, and Kelly warns people not to “attempt to reside” in Victoria. The second scene is when Francis Hare, (Hurry), is addressing his officers and warns that the Kelly Gang have been elevated as leaders of a “movement” that threatens the very structure of the colony of Victoria. What the book reveals is that Kelly and the Gang were trying to initiate an uprising, and cleave the rail at Gelnrowan to attend them in this. It was not impartial an attempt to demolish as many officers as they could for no true reason. They also had supporters ready to rise in the region around the town, and there were worries after the seige ended that they would aloof cause inconvenience.

Also, the book presents a more balanced context to the movie. Like him or dislike him, it is undoubted that Ned Kelly makes a ample movie and will remain in the favorite imagination for generations to arrive.

Recently I went to a theater showing the Disney remake, Flubber, starring Robin Williams. Although I detached bewitch the new The Absent Minded Professor, Flubber was a whole lot of fun.

Robin Williams plays a science professor looking for a recent execute of energy. As the film opens, Williams is already in pain of missing his fill wedding for the third time. But while guests wait patiently Williams discovers the semi-intelligent Flubber. Noteworthy of the rest of the film is spent trying to find attend the heart of his fiance and subsequently achieve the collage from bankruptcy and closure. Williams is looking for a unusual energy source yet he has a robot that can defy gravity and powered by simple electricity. He needs a discovery worth money yet he has two very successful and useful robots, one of them alive. Flubber itself has been made into some kind of life develop. This may be satisfactory for merchandising but one can only wonder about the source of powdered Flubber or the implications of flight resulting from intentionally causing the organism’s decay. Selling the rights to flying cars to Ford made for a laughable scene but now there can potentially be millions of semi-responsible drivers flying through the country’s airlanes while carrying radioactive materials. Additionally, a few scenes were changed from the unusual and are now less plausible. For instance, in the unusual, the fiancé calls the professor when he is tedious for the wedding again.

So if you are looking for fun then this is your movie. However, if you tend to rebel at inconsistencies and like your plots to fabricate sense, then you might want to avoid this one. It’s up to you.

I went and saw The Sky Crawlers at Toronto’s 08 Film Festival, and wasn’t surprised when most of the audience seemed to promenade away feeling a bit unaffected by the movie. The film’s director Mamoru Oshii has a cinematic style that is nothing if not an acquired taste — one that domestic theaters are reticent to catch.

Any person who has addicted themselves to the frail Aristotelian tale structure will secure themselves feeling lost and aimless by the middle of Act 2 in Sky Crawlers and most of Oshii’s films. If there even is an Act 2 in the first station. The substantial bang opening action sequence between the fighter pilots in Sky Crawlers is about as formulaic as Oshii is willing to win with any of his movies. After that, he transitions from speed-of-light action to speed-of-life storytelling where his characters and their dialoug all have the same pacing and meandering of actual life. That means, if you’re obsolete to Hollywood’s sparkling characters bloated with one-liners and a space that runs straight for the end-zone, than you’ll probably salvage Oshii’s films to be lifeless. Maybe even dead.

It also means that you’re probably not his audience.

Oshii’s critical audience seems to be himself, as most of his characters seem to be alter-egos helping him decide his fill philosophical conflicts and questions about society. His secondary audience is anybody trying to do the same for themselves. I don’t mind watching Oshii talk to himself in his movies since the dialog is so colorful and unpretentious. For the most share the characters say what they mean, and mean what they say. They can’t afford to do otherwise, because we are finding them at murky, introspective moments in their lives which is usually when a person is pruned of all pretense. This is precisely why I collect Oshii’s cinematic language so refreshing. Despite his graphically lush visuals, his movies manage to have a closer kinship to literature than cinema. Listening may be more distinguished than looking in his films. For example, the characters in Sky Crawlers instruct Japanese on the ground, but switch to English when at war. This carry out seems to be commentary on how American occupation has shifted the habits of Japan’s youth, which according to Oshii, has become more violent.

There are times when I fount myself apprehensive about the fate of this film. There is a war between Lautern and Rostock corporations, and the very accurate wars are staged within a “theater set”. “Kildrens” are fighter pilots bio-engineered to quit young and never to arrive adulthood–they are trained to wage excited dogfights above the clouds. The draw the film is structured is gracious as Oshii slowly but methodically brings us to understand this surreal world. The characters in “Sky Crawlers” feel very exact, and you can easily design an attachment to them. The most animated character of all would have to be Suito Kusanagi (curiously carries a strong resemblance to the major in Ghost in the Shell), and most of the film’s burden falls on her. Mitsuya (voiced by Chiaki Kuriyama) didn’t explain up until the film’s third act, but the significance of her character is beautifully played by Oshii. The animation is a blend of 3-D graphics and it seems to me that the only 2-D animation rendered may be the characters. Some may feel the simplicity on the characters’ rendition may be a microscopic out of residence but I rather liked the fact that the animation helmed by Nishikubo Toshihiko was kept grounded and a limited restrained. I would not like an overload of special effects to overshadow exactly what the film is trying to say. Yes, the film is an emotionally driven melodrama, with nicely placed sequences of dogfights ONLY to withhold it interesting; but the aerial battles aren’t the film’s main design. Those looking for fast-paced action are better off looking elsewhere.

The film isn’t perfect though, as it doesn’t really procedure upon the stakes as to why this war is being fought. The corporations lacked (ahem) development, and the life outside the lives of our squadron are only hinted at and never truly fleshed out. Besides some minor space limitations imposed by itself, the film does remain strong in its incandescent simplicity. I liked the mysterious “Teacher” in a plane with a “dark jaguar” in its nose, I was reminded of the “Red Baron” in World War One–a supposedly ace pilot that any encounter with him may mean distinct death. It added a sure different air of mystery, although some parts felt a diminutive forced; but it doesn`t really wound the movie. This is also NOT your children’s anime film, as besides its darkly thought-provoking premise, there are hinted at sex and tranquil nudity. This film is rightfully rated PG-13.

“Sky Crawlers” may have a somewhat bizarre title, but gain me when I say that this anime film is very worthy worth a lag. Noteworthy like Oshii’s “Ghost in the Shell”, the film manages to score a soul, with a well-structured anecdote that hits all the moral spots. Remarkably simple, and astonishingly thought-provoking, the film manages to instill our emotions. During these times, it makes us wonder what exactly are the young men and women are sacrificing to safeguard peace and order. Objective how exactly can war affect an individual? Would each destroy affect their soul? When is enough is enough?

I’m not determined what makes the ultimate edition remarkable different from the special edition, as both include the director’s gash and theatrical version. The ultimate edition does include a ‘making of’ featurette, as well as a ‘Is there a stargate’ featurette that isn’t included on the special edition. These are both curious, but nothing to write home about. One mountainous incompatibility is the audio. The ult. ed. includes DTS 6.1 audio, as well as dolby digital 5.1.

Good: Being a fan of Stargate SG-1, I wanted to maintain the novel movie as well, and when the ult. ed. was released, knew it was time to bewitch. I watched the director’s nick, and was amazed. There were added scenes, as well as extended existing scenes. These changes really gave me a better opinion of how things in the tv display came to be the map they are, such as the relationship between Jack O’Neill and Daniel Jackson. Overall, I’m cheerful I added this DVD to my collection. My only wish is that the Stargate SG-1 DVDs included late the scenes or blooper reels as well.

It seems like everyone now enjoy’s ripping on “The Blair Witch Project”, and I don’t rep it?! It’s almost like when you awe the hell out of that kid when you are in 6th grade, and he might have been screaming wide-eyed with apprehension, only to deny you a couple minutes later “Hey, You Didn’t Dread Me”, fair to repair his pride or ego. When I first saw “Blair Witch”, it did awe me, and left me a slight rattled at the destroy…..why? Because when I went to glance it in the theater, there was collected a strong buzz about the movie that it was either really an aborted documentary, or was a film based on lawful events…we were supposedly seeing the fine article. Determined, I may have been duped by a clever marketing campaign that alive to TV mocumentaries, internet gossip and radio buzz…..and looking wait on I deem that was expansive. “Blair Witch” if nothing else, is a astonishing homage to William Castle, who attend in the day of “The Tingler” would wire theater seats to shock steal members of the audience to induce a well timed cry, or his film “The House on Shocked Hill”, where skeletons would buzz the audience, or his movie “Straight Jacket” in which he offered the audience a chance to capture life insurance in case the film shrinking them to death. That is mountainous stuff that keep butts in the theater seats, and with the advances in technology, and new communication, “Blair Witch” and it’s marketing campaign did the same thing, only the updated version. It worked, the movie made a ton of dough and was the water-cooler talk around theoffice for weeks. Did I feel let down when I learned “Blair Witch” was impartial a movie? No. I applauded the thought tedious the movie, and only wish more films would do the same. As far as the steady movie goes when I behold it on dvd….well it doesn’t pack the same punch as when you might believe these were right events, but I detached earn a kick out of it. And it’s clear this film hit’s a nerve with quite a few people, I mean at this time there are over 1700 reviews posted here at Amazon about this movie…most are ripping the film apart….but there objective seems to be a hint of that 6th grader saying “Yeah….you didn’t awe me” as they race over to turn on the lights after the movie ends.

I really don’t care for recent alarm movies….they seem so tiresome nowadays (Bawl was a unusual exception) . But I really liked this.

If you like Hollywood cookie-cutter fright movies, this is definitely NOT for you. It’s a very current, experimental movie, one which had elements from my childhood nightmares (getting lost, being in a outlandish house, etc.) .

Why it works, I deem, is because so remarkable is unseen or vague, leaving mighty of what is going on to your have imagination, sort of like Jaws, where the most intense scenes are those where the shark isn’t even in contemplate. Hitchcock understood this notion, that less is more.

Unfortunately, today’s viewers (especially younger ones) are jaded by the glut of gore and special effects in original Hollywood alarm movies, which may define the negative reviews (worst movie ever? Not by a long-shot) . Gore is almost non-existent in this movie…but be warned, I maintain the “R” rating comes from the exercise of the “F” word, which becomes more and more prevalent as the three filmmakers derive more and more lost/scared/frustrated.

I was a puny disappointed at the ending initially, but the movie stuck with me for weeks after (I also had pains falling asleep the night I saw it) ….give it a shot.

I’ve been a bigger Friday the 13th fan than a Nightmare on Elm Street fan. The woods simply seem more inherently evil and perilous than a suburban street for horny teens. In any event, I feel that both of these series, especially Friday the 13th, have lost their lure in new years. Trying to salvage ways to bring aid our current slashers and attempting to do it in contemporary fashion have fallen short, in my belief. I’ve remained a fan through it all, yet when they took Jason out of Camp Crystal Lake and brought him to Unique York City, he somehow became less imposing and some of the mystery was lost.

Freddy vs. Jason was an understanding borne years before this film began pre-production. The premise of the film (Freddy calling on Jason to strike horror wait on into the children of Elm Street) is decent, but it seemed to me that something was missing…

I enjoyed the movie, especially the dream sequences, but I couldn’t effect my finger on what was contemptible with the film. It unprejudiced didn’t feel like Friday the 13th to me. It felt more like a Nightmare on Elm Street film, but even those movies were scarier. This movie bordered on absurd at times and considerable of what we had approach to know about Freddy and Jason was betrayed in this film by intention of contradiction (i.e. Jason suddenly having a phobia of water after he had, on many occassions in the past, pursued people into the water to slay them) .

I am cheerful that this movie was made and I will always remain a fan, but I feel that with all of the time and writing that went into this notion, it could have been a hell of a lot better. The legend was not dreadful, but the movie was simply not scary or suspenseful at all. It’s a must eye for any fan of either series, if for no other reason than to watch what your celebrated classic slasher is up to – but don’t examine to procure that excellent weak feeling you outmoded to earn when watching a Friday the 13th or a Nightmare on Elm Street film assist in the 80s and 90s.

The bonus material is extensive and quite exhaustive. They cloak every aspect of the film, including pre-production, direction, stunts, visual effects, make-up, audio commentary, deleted scenes, storyboards and galleries, etc…. The bonus disc amounts to a few hours of extra viewing, which is actually glowing informative and insightful. With icy, enthralling menus, this is a spacious DVD edition for something of a letdown film.

Freddy Krueger. Jason Voorhees. Two characters in the American dread film canon that simply refuse to go away. Literally, since both are impervious to lasting physical injury. You can situation these guys on fire, stab them, dissect them, blow them up, do unprejudiced about anything you want to them and they hold coming befriend for more. How many films have both of them made at this point? Twenty? It feels like a hundred. The combined box office and home rental bewitch of the “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Friday the 13th” franchises must be finish to a billion dollars by now, so when Unusual Line Cinema acquired the rights to get future Jason films they knew they were on to something ample. Lori doesn’t learn what happened to him until Freddy decides to arrive out of retirement.

Krueger, you perceive, despises the fact that the Elm Street kiddies don’t know about him. In order to once again torment the descendants of his oppressors, he resurrects the dreaded Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger) to hump things up in his ragged neighborhood. Jason does an agreeable job of instilling the appropriate amount of doom and gloom in the kids, partly through his beastly appearance and partly through his penchant for imaginative killings. In one case, he folds a kid up in a bed. Hardly disturbing, moral? Well, it is when the dreadful chap’s heels are touching the benefit of his head! Voorhees’s antics soon know no bounds. He shows up at a rave in a cornfield objective in time to massacre scores of kids in particularly sinister ways. Jason kills so many people, and keeps on killing more, that it puts a serious crimp in Freddy’s plans when he shows arrives on the scene. He wants all the children to himself, which means Jason has to go serve to hell quick. Quandary is, the masked maniac isn’t going to do it without a minute benefit. The result is the fight, a slam bang, retract no prisoners tete a tete that is breathtaking to explore. Neo and Agent Smith can’t compare to these two. Freddy and Jason squaring off translates into a lot of blood and a lot of broken bones. Any humans who happen to acquire in the plan are hamburger.

“Freddy vs. Jason” is a massively sharp film. It’s not a worn slasher film although there are slasher elements in it. It’s not a character driven film, either, except for the two killing machines. The entire film exists solely as background for the final showdown. Obvious, some of the effects up to this point, including the shadow Freddy and Kelly Rowland’s nose flying off, garner a chuckle or two. But the fight scene stands center stage. The best fragment has to be when Freddy dumps dozens of long pieces of rebar down on an unsuspecting Jason, several pieces of which turn the hockey masked maniac into a giant shish kebob. Or maybe the best scenes include the battle at the lake where Freddy and Jason exchange blows resulting in tall gouts of sad gore. Whichever piece you like the most, the conclusion to the film won’t disappoint. Given the emphasis on the fight, it’s sort of disappointing we don’t bag to use more time with the always comely Monica Keena. She’s the sort of young lady I never tire of seeing in a film. I would tune in to stare her sit around in sweat pants and a grungy T-shirt eating breakfast. In “Freddy vs. Jason,” though, she’s one step above cannon fodder. Pity.

The amount of supplements included with the film traipse the imagination. A commentary track with director Ronny Yu, Robert Englund, and Ken Kirzinger heads the list. You’ve also got a “jump to a death” option, trailers, an curious documentary on the special effects, interviews about the worry in bringing the film to fruition, and a lengthy text article from Fangoria magazine about the myriad scripts penned by many writers over the years. I highly recommend this film for those viewers looking for a grand blueprint to whittle away a few hours. I’ll be watching it again soon.

July 2007 Update!!!!!! There is going to be a movie! So the first sentence in my modern review below turns out to be erroneous. Star Ellen Muth goes so far as to hint that that a renewal of the series might be possible. Details are quiet forthcoming and apart from the movie (and I’m sorry, I don’t know if this is a TV, a direct-to-DVD, or theatrical release) nothing clear is known about the chances of the series being revived, but this is definitely estimable news. There is some recasting. Mandy Patinkin, unfortunately, will not be abet as Rube nor will Laura Harris as Daisy. It appears Rube’s character is being replaced by a original head reaper, while a recent actress will be playing Daisy. Otherwise all the other actors will be succor.

Tragically, this will be the final season of Expressionless LIKE ME that we will accumulate. Although there is currently a campaign being waged to rescue the demonstrate, these campaigns inevitably and unfortunately result in failure. The cancellation of the prove is hard to elaborate. My lone cause for hope for the short term future of quality television is that LOST enjoyed such titanic success in its first season that networks are currently scrambling for long epic arc shows with well written, deeply interconnected scripts that typified all of the shows I mentioned above. Maybe, unbiased maybe, the tide has turned. Unfortunately, not soon enough to build Lifeless LIKE ME.

In its first season, Insensible LIKE ME expeditiously established itself as one of the quirkiest and finest shows on television. As any watcher of the point to will know, Georgia Lass was a young girl who became a grim reaper after dying in a bizarre accident. The reveal explored what it means to be alive through the struggles of one who was no longer alive, but who nonetheless quiet was confronted with the need to persist in a world in which in many ways she no longer belonged. Issues of friendship, work, belonging, responsibility were all dealt with in clever, radiant, and silly ways. The enormous news for those who haven’t seen this series (and there are many who don’t have Showtime and therefore rely on DVDs for their experience with the point to) is that Season Two is a noteworthy, grand better season than the first. Without exception, the writers manage to effect and expand all of the major characters, with the exception of George’s father, who plays a lessened role. George becomes a far richer character, finally at ease with being a reaper and acknowledging that she has responsibilities. Her challenge in Season Two is deciding what she wants with the unlife that she has. She struggles with issues of worship, and grows considerably as a human being. Even more than George, Rube (Mandy Patinkin) becomes a more complex, absorbing character. In a slowly developed myth arc, we learn more about Rube’s life, we find glimpses of his family (he learns that a daughter he fathered in genuine life is collected living, and he visits her in a nursing home immediately before her death), and are given some hints as to his death (the results of a bank robbery, the details of which might have been explored in Season Three) . Mason, without ceasing to be a bit of a clown (in one episode, “Send in the Clown,” literally), is revealed in far more complex and intelligent person than he did in Season One, while Daisy Adair becomes vastly more than the mere self-obsessed sexpot she was earlier. In fact, Daisy becomes a many layered, sympathetic, impossible-to-predict individual. In particular, her relationship with Mason, who is completely smitten with her, is developed in mammoth detail. George discovers that her parents are divorcing and that they are selling the house she grew up in, and we survey her mother exploring current romance, and we contemplate her relationship with her daughter Reggie collect some depth as George’s sister gradually comes out of the shellshock that gripped her in the first season following George’s death.

What is great to me is that the point to managed to become richer and more complex on virtually every level, all while generating a string of ample individual episodes. The frustrating thing about the demonstrate not being renewed is that there were a host of unexplored possibilities, so many unanswered questions. Would George manage to earn admire? Would her parents reconcile or accept fresh relationships? Would her mother accept a buyer for the house? Fair how did Rube die, and was it related to the bank robbery? Would anything ever happen between Daisy and Mason? And there were a host of life experiences that had not yet been explored. There was unquestionably a broad amount of room for many more stories.

DEAD LIKE ME is a sizable example of a note that doesn’t fit archaic entertainment economic categories. It was produced by MGM television, but shown on Showtime. The latter at least in section declined to renew the prove because its rating were not strong, while MGM wanted it to be renewed in share because of the strong DVD sales. We have seen a number of shows that have enjoyed former ratings on TV experience mountainous DVD sales. FIREFLY, FAMILY GUY, and WONDERFALLS are three examples. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER is one of the best selling TV series ever on DVD, but never enjoyed especially expansive ratings on TV. My guess is that at some point the television production companies are going to have to work something out with the broadcast and cable networks to perform it more handsome for the networks to retain shows that are highly successful on DVD but that do not accept huge ratings on the air. At display, most of the help of keeping Dreary LIKE ME on would have primarily benefited MGM, but not Showtime. Last year Twentieth Century Fox (not to be confused with FOX TV; though both have the same parent company, they are separate companies) very powerful wanted to sustain ANGEL going because of its strong DVD sales, but the WB wanted to go in fresh directions (terrible directions, it turned out, since none of its shows this year have gathered the ratings that ANGEL did, nor have any enjoyed the notable acclaim that it did) . More and more overall viewership of TV series is declining, while DVD sales and rentals of TV shows is increasing. This is top-notch for production companies, but poor for networks, and some formula needs to be found to get it excellent for both. ANGEL was cancelled in piece because Twentieth Century Fox refused to lop the amount it charged the WB to expose the series. Until the production companies agree to back discontinuance the loss of income the networks are experiencing, I deem we are going to explore a lot of shows that have a little but dedicated audience fail to be renewed. Everyone loses. The production company loses the opportunity to sell their product to the networks and the potential DVD sales. The networks lose because they are getting cheaper but more mediocre product. And the fans of shows lose because they collect high quality shows like Insensible LIKE ME pushed aside for blander and less bright programming.

At least we have two very graceful seasons to view of this very, very qualified series. We can only hope that the television industry can collect the legal alchemy to invent it possible for favorable series like this survive in the future.

I abhor that this point to was cancelled. Cable TV dilapidated to be a safehaven for great scripted series like this one. Now “Listless Like Me” is gone, and its been replaced by “Paunchy Actress.” It seems that reality TV is invading even the premium channels now – its dismal. “Stupid Like Me” was the best and yes, most successful exhibit on Showtime’s lineup, and the only reason it was cancelled was because the head of the network didn’t really catch it to his taste.

DLM, good in its first season, really hit its travel in season 2. All the characters were already well established, so the second season really allowed them to begin up and do some sharp things, and the acting was never better. George (Ellen Muth) has adjusted to her death but composed hasn’t forgotten her family. Her family (Cynthia Stevenson, Greg Kean, Britt McKillip) is collected affected by the loss of George but start to recover and keep themselves as individuals – especially Reggie (McKillip), who is one of the best characters in the note this season. Thats saying something, considering that all of the reapers (Callum Blue, Jasmine Guy, Laura Harris, Mandy Patinkin) are all at the top of their game as well. Rube (Patinkin) becomes even more of a father figure to the reapers, especially George, while at the same time beginning to contemplate on his life, something he stayed far away from in season 1. Roxy’s (Guy) identity becomes more defined, and Mason (Blue) is Well-behaved as the screw-up older brother figure to George, and his pursual of Daisy (Harris), provides mighty of the hilarity as well as a suitable deal of the season’s emotion. Daisy, who was added midway through season 1, is now a fully established character and it reflections into her past that provides many of the questions that will unfortunately be left unanswered due to the show’s premature cancellation.

I can’t wait for the season to advance DVD. Season two really turned DLM into a week-to-week addiction, and its episodes are among the series’ best. The prove is definately the funniest and most tantalizing its ever been, and I’m not ashamed to say that I’ll be counting down the days until July 19th.

Is there such a thing as a dreadful movie made in Italy? Probably, but at least the scenery’s usually genuine. I can’t imagine A Agreeable Woman working in a setting like Recent York or London, but I don’t have to. It’s state in 1930’s Amalfi, the perfect background for a account like this one. Professional mistress Mrs. Erlynne flees to Italy when too many wives are on to her at home. On the ship, she notices a newspaper photo of a young couple, and she knows exactly what her next proceed should be. The young wife is innocent and naive, and all sorts of innuendo and gossip go flying around Amalfi that season.

This is a woman’s recount, and Helen Hunt as the adventuress has never looked more magnificent. Her converse, unfortunately, is rather too clipped and less sultry than it need to be, but in the ruin, she pulls of her role. Scarlett Johanssen is well-suited to her character, and both women turn out to be more than they seem at the raze. Attractive wardrobe, very subtle music, and a glorious performance by Tom Wilkinson, as a jaded, expat Brit who has learned a microscopic something about reality and happiness, add to the success of this production.

Some people like to skydive or rock climb for adventure. I must admit, at this stage in my life, adventure (for me) is jumping into a movie that I know absolutely nothing about and hoping for the best. Mettlesome, huh? Such is the case with the vaguely titled “A Superior Woman.” I knew it starred Helen Hunt, Tom Wilkinson and Scarlett Johannson–and that was enough to lead me on the “adventure” of discovering this film. Imagine my surprise, then, (about a third of the map through) when a character named Windermere was purchasing a fan for his wife–and I suddenly realized I was watching a unique modernization of Oscar Wilde’s classic play aptly entitled “Lady Windermere’s Fan.” I felt dazzling foolish, I must admit–but I don’t entirely blame myself.

Instead of the claustrophobic drawing rooms in 1890’s England, “A Trustworthy Woman” is fashioned in Italy of the 1930’s (an uncommon choice considering the political climate at the time–which is conveniently never mentioned) . The Windermere’s are now Americans. And what was once Wilde’s comedy of manners has become a rather stilted drama with occasional one-liners that fans of Wilde’s works will scrutinize. I certainly have no dilemma with re-imagining a classic work, such as this. But “A Grand Woman” keeps the storyline of “Lady Windermere’s Fan” while jettisoning the elements that effect it an effective social commentary. The intimate settings of the play place a world where gossip is an necessary fragment of daily life, the depraved interactions are all anyone have to bear their time. By opening things up to the Italian countryside, this seems to be less relevant. It’s as if the essential characters are engaged in a different movie from the supporting players who produce mockery of them.

“A Suited Woman” tells the anecdote of Mrs. Erlynne (Helen Hunt), a seductress that has made a career of manipulating the egos of wealthy men. After being chased from American society, she settles in Italy where her path crosses with a young aristocrat named Windermere and his bride (Johannson) . Windermere’s relationship with Mrs. Erlynne sets the tongues wagging. It’s best not to announce too distinguished of the situation for those outlandish with the play–but again, the film’s screenplay loses remarkable of Wilde’s language, race, and intricate comedy. Only the talented and British supporting players, led by the sublime Wilkinson, seem to be trying to contain Wilde’s spirit.

Still, this is a radiant production. But no amount of lush scenery and gorgeous costuming can veil the film’s truly fatal flaw. No offense to Helen Hunt, or her fans, but her interpretation of Mrs. Erlynne leaves noteworthy to be desired. With a stilted cadence to her speech and a pinched expression, Hunt never convinces us that she could be the irresistible creation that she needs to be. Johannson is somewhat vacant in her role, as well, but that is better disguised by her character’s naiveté. It is Wilkinson, in particular, that completely saves this production. With distinguished needed humor and charm, “A Generous Woman” is inexplicably salvaged by a man! While this isn’t dreadful by any stretch, it’s unlikely to send unique viewers to spy out the works of Oscar Wilde–and that’s a valid disappointment. KGHarris, 03/07.

The Zatoichi television series ran for over 5 years, from 1974-1979. And with 100 episodes planned, this first season of 26 episodes will give fans of the Zatoichi films more of the luscious character of Ichi to indulge in. As with some of the other episodes in the first six volumes, there are some episodes that are directly from the film series: Some that are slightly different, and this Volume 3 is no exception. However, there are also some totally different plots in many of them, and this particular volume is a big addition to your Ichi collection. I rate this volume [Stars: 4.5]. #10: “THE SUMO WRESTLER WHO FOUND HIS HOME.” Very estimable drama, and ending action by Ichi highlight this wonderful episode. Zatoichi encounters a young man who is about to destroy himself. Moreover, he is an orphan and Ichi sympathizes with the young man. That is until the young man [who is a sumo wrestler] tags along and follows Ichi. To the irritation of Ichi, the young sumo wrestler follows Ichi wherever he goes.In the background of this episode, there is a Ronin, who has been following Ichi. His name is Yaturo Soma, and he is top-notch with the sword. However, Ichi discovers something about this young sumo wrestlers past and resolves to support him. The ending action is fine. There are lots of ending action scenes with Ichi–more than usual for the TV series. I liked this episode quite a lot. [Stars: 5+]

#11: “THE WHIRLWIND OF KISOJI MOUNTAIN.” The beginning transfer on this episode is not gracious, but it does pick up better. Also, this is one of those episodes that culls a bit from the Motion Report films. The episode opens with Ichi being accused of stealing a horse, and then thrown in jail. At the same time, a group of assassins are attempting to demolish Ichi. Further enhancing this episode, is a side myth with a doctor who has reach to support the villagers while on his search for annual plants to expend for medicines. Moreover, a yakuza boss has hired a marksman to extinguish Ichi, and here this episode will intersect with doctor, Ichi, and the gunmen. The film has a gigantic ending with Ichi’s swordplay in action. [Stars: 5]

#12: “HUMANITY AND JUSTICE.” Beneficial area shots highlight this particular episode. The scenery is attractive. This is a very different episode in regards to the TV series, and the films. However, there are similarities, not too mighty though, to “Zatoichi #12: Zatoichi and the Chess Expert.” This episode finds a female yakuza out to avenge the death of her father. In doing so, she dresses as a man, and acts like one. However, Ichi knows that she is a female. As this young woman seeks her vengeance, it is up to Ichi to attach her. There are some comical element thrown into this particular episode–especially with boss Gonzo. All in all, a very proper episode and a funny and welcome relief to the TV series. However, there is plenty of ending action by Ichi, and he is incredibly snappily with the cane sword. [Stars: 4.5]

#13: “THE 1,000 RYO RAFFLE.” This is an titillating episode, and stars the young Yoshio Harada as a recently released prisoner. Shinsuke (Yoshio Harada) has arrive to recognize vengeance on those who have wronged him. Ichi helps him in the beginning, and Shinsuke gives Ichi a raffle sign. Unknown to either, it is a winning 1,000 ryo lottery notice. Ichi and Shinsuke have departed ways, therefore, Ichi seeks this ancient prison inmate out. Going to Shinsuke’s seaside village. Yet, Shinsuke does not want the money. He has a code of honor, and this code will not allow him to collect it. For he has told Ichi that he has given it plan. Moreover, he has near serve to recognize vengeance. The original boss is not an top-notch man, and it is a woman that Shinsuke seeks out–and that goes for the men who wronged him. Once again Ichi approach to the rescue. It was suitable to gawk Yoshio Harada in this episode, who would also team up later in his career with Ichi in the film “Ronin Gai.” Not a immense episode, but intelligent nonetheless, with the predicable Ichi sword slashing ending.
